A Visit at Grandma's House
Jul 04 2016 CEST
ememberandt knocked on the door of his grandmother's mansion. He had planned on visiting her for years, however, his services for the King had always kept him away. With some time off now, he rushed to her house in hope of finding her alive and well.
He leaned his cranial basher against the wall next to the door. He did not want his grandmother to see him armed. He feared she might not recognise him, since his adventures had left visible marks on him. A scarred and armed warrior at her door step might scare her, he thought.
To his surprise though, his grandma knew immediately who he was when she opened the door. She walked smilingly towards him and gave him a big hug that he - he had to admit - had been longing for, for quite a while. He felt safe and at home right away in her arms, just like he always had as a little boy.
Before they went inside, his grandmother's eyes rested on his weapon for a moment. It was enchanted with fire energy. She smiled, padded him proudly on his back and said:
They went into the warm and cosy living room and he set down. Grandma quickly put the cake on the table, however, before she joined him, she rummaged around in her old Venorean cabinet and asked:
Well, who could say "no" to that...
 | "That picture was created around the time when they discovered how to enchant weapons. I remembered it when I saw your fiery cranial basher outside. You youngens use these elements so self-evidently these days. I remember the times well before enchanting weapons was even possible." |
| She flipped the page... "Ah, this dwarf reminds me of old Kazordoon. Do you remember how it looked there before all these precious wall decorations, statues and colourful crystals were put up? That place looked quite dreary in the early days." | |
 | "Now that picture shows Yalahar!", she said after she turned the page. "The dwarves had furbished their city just in time, I'd say. Kazordoon would have looked really poor compared to Yalahar. As if they had known in advance that they would have to step up their game..." |
| "Look at the Medusa!", she exclaimed. "See all the snakes she has as hair? I don't ever want to run into one of them. Have you had to fight one of these creatures yet, my boy?" | |
 | She looked quite long at the next picture:"Ah, now it slowly rings a bell... Farmine, Zao...", she muttered. "I have heard many stories about this place. Have you seen these gnarlhounds here? Is it true that orcs use them as mounts?" she asked and flipped the page... |
| "Have you ventured into Northern Zao, my boy? Did you have to face any of these drakens? Are the stories that people tell true, that they become more and more powerful with every day...? Knowing that you put yourself in such dangers worries me sick..." | |
 | She silently turned to the next page. "The mighty Colossus of Kazordoon. Lothar tried to convince me to ride there with him on the back of some tamed animal. I did not trust his taming skills, though, so I declined. Nowadays you often see people riding on the backs of creatures. Back then, this was not a common thing to do..." |
| "I would enjoy having such a crystal wolf to ride on! Isn't it georgous, despite its evilness? I have heard that it is on flames, sometimes. That's quite curious. I would probably be safer on such a kingly deer, here." She paused and kept her gaze on the picture a bit longer. "...when I was young," she suddenly said, I would have looked good in an elementalist outfit!" | |
 | "...an insectoid outfit would have suited me well, too. Just imagine, me, wearing this, riding on the back of a lady bug. That would have been a sight! I would probably not have been brave enough, though, to face the Hive Born. Not the Deeplings either, for that matter. I sure would love to visit Quirefang one day. Have you been there?" |
| Oh look, a gnome! They are allies with the dwarves, aren't they? As far as I know, they lead a quiet life in seclusion somewhere below the surface. It seems they love mushrooms... I have not yet seen one of these little ones... They do exist, don't they?" | |
 | She flipped to another page. After a short while, she said:"This demon outfit would surely look good on you, you should definitely be wearing this...! Is that the goblin merchant Rafzan, by the way?" She went on to the next picture. |
| Now this is great! A forest fury... I like them, somehow. I would not want to visit places like Drefia, though. These creatures there scare me. ...Necromancers, dark summoners, vampire nobles... But maybe they would even leave me alone, there's not much life to suck out of me left anyway...", she chuckled. | |
 | She turned the page..."Oh, what horror! You will never have to go to this place, will you? Guzzlemaws... Choking Fear... Roshamuul....what an awful place. I can't look at this picture for long. Thinking about all the evil in this world keeps me up at nights." With that said, she quickly went on... |
| "Ah, Oramond", she said. Have you been to Rathleton? Have you used this slime slide system? How does it feel? It sounds like fun! I have heard that this area is quite dangerous, though. Are metal gargoyles really all metal?" While Rememberandt tried to answer her questions, she slowly turned to the next page, listening closely to his stories... | |
 | ...which triggered many more questions. "Is this professor Maxxen in this picture? And in the back you can see a devourer, right? Oh, and a roaring lion, what a nice mount. What's up with all the water in this picture?" |
| The questioning stopped abruptly with the next captured scene."Were-creatures!" she said with terror in her eyes. "Grimvale must be a real bad place to be. The King doesn't send you there, does he? I hear that if you get bitten by one of these creatures, you become like them. What horror!" | |
 | She quickly turned the page. "Uh, Ogres!" She said excitedly. "Somehow they don't scare me at all. Have you been to Krailos? Did you like the desert valley with its sandstone formations?" |
| She turned the page and looked long at this last piece of art. Finally she spoke up:"This otherworld that people are talking about these days, this place that you supposedly get to through vortices - I really don't believe it exists. It is way too scary to imagine that our world is on the brink of falling apart. I think this picture is a fake. Just the imagination of a confused mind. And don't you dare tell me otherwise! I don't want to hear it." | |
She closed the book, stashed it away and quickly changed the subject.
she asked.
We hope you enjoyed this peek in Grandma's collector's album. Which was your favourite picture?
