Spirithunter - Cool Title!
Oct 02 2017 CEST

hile she was at the post office in Edron, Snoopy Moony overheard some people talking about spirithunters. That word immediately caught her attention. She was desperate for a new adventure. She started to listen in on the conversation, eager to find out more. When she then heard the strangers talking about her good friend Spectulus and his crazy ideas, she knew exactly where she would be going next. She was certain that Spectulus would spill his beans if he really was on to a new project.

...Excitedly she ran up the stairs in the magic academy to Spectulus' office, and before she could bring up the topic, he greeted her as if he had already been waiting for her: Ah hello again Snoopy Moony! I still have one or two other missions for you. There are also some tasks someone needs to attend to.

Puzzled, she asked him to go on, and he invited her to do some scientific research for him. That did not sound very appealing at first, but when he asked: You ain't afraid of no ghost, right?, she felt relieved. This sounded indeed like a new adventure was ahead of her.

When Spectulus asked if she could explain at least three of the following terms: infestations, collective apparitions, ectoplasmic segregations, ecto-magical field phenomena, neuro-speculative sub-conscious awareness of spirits, ghosts and/or ghasts, she quickly said yes without even consulting her brain first. She wanted to be trusted with this new task and she did not want anything to get in the way.
Now, however, these words resonated in her head, and she felt a bit of panic come up. Most of these terms did not mean anything to her. Her insecurities were on the rise. What would be expected of her? Hopefully she could master the tasks, she worried.

Spectulus seemed satisfied with her initial confirmation: Excellent! You do? Most interesting!, he said. We should definitely controvert the actual soul reincarnation of super-luminescent spores I recently witnessed under laboratory conditions. I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that magical sources influence the psy- oh, oh sorry, got carried away a bit there. Phew! Let's just say I can't wait!

Spectulus explained that he and Sinclair had started working together to find out more about such complex phenomena like ghosts. What he said, sounded curious: We will not only explain them - we will 'remove' them. At first we need to find out more about ghosts in general. I still need more information and values to properly calibrate the magical orientation of orange and turquoise sparkle attractors which we will need to actually contain ghost-emissions. So are you in?, he asked, and Snoopy agreed, though she was not sure anymore. His words went way over her head. After her previous bold confirmation of her knowledge, however, she did not feel like she could refuse the invitation.

Not sensing her uncertainty, Spectulus happily handed her a wand he called a spirit meter, asked her not to break it, and sent her to the graveyard in Edron. She looked at the item she had just received, and gave Spectulus a questioning look. He explained: It is a modified spectroscope. We quickly found out how to enhance the magic field around common crystals to absorb and reflect the kind and amount of energy, all sorts of spirits emit. Currently our goal is to calibrate and fine-tune the resonance.

Not sure if this really explained anything, she did not dare to bother Spectulus any further. She felt pressured to pretend that she had actually understood what he had just said. So she decided to simply go on to the graveyard. She knew where it was located and what to expect there. She would meet tons of ghouls and skeletons. A short time ago this would have scared her, but she had gained confidence in the meantime that she could deal with them and that they would not pose any threat to her. She was relieved that this part of the adventure did not seem life threatening, at least. She still did not know what to do with this spirit meter, but just hoped that she would have an idea once she got there...

She had already slain several ghouls and skeletons before she started thinking more about her mission. She decided to let her instincts take over and to simply give it a try. She held the spirit meter with both hands, pointed it towards a gravestone and tentatively tried using it just like she usually uses her rod. When nothing happened, she put a bit more power into it. What happened next looked kind of gross. An incredibly slimy substance oozed out of every crack in the old gravestone and started to attack her! She quickly killed that squidgy slime. Surprised by this, and still a bit out of breath, she tried again. And again. And again. Everytime the same thing happened.

She was not certain if this actually was what Spectulus wanted her to find out, but it seemed important and strange enough that she decided to inform him of her findings. Happy that she was able to deliver some results at least, she mounted Truly Dooly and left that dreadful place...

Let me see the spirit meter, Spectulus said. Hmmm... those are grave news you bring - uhm, you know what I mean. But this is awesome! Now I know for sure that the calibration is only some short bursts of magically enhanced energy away.
Not knowing whether grave had been an intended pun or not, she decided to remain quiet. She could not tell if Spectulus was really satisfied. He did invite her to further assist with the research, and that was a relief. He sent her downstairs to Sinclair to get a spirit cage to collect the essence of a common ghost for further analysis.
Snoopy, still feeling rather clueless, gratefully listened to further explanations that Sinclair offered, after he had worked a bit on this strange device that he now showed her: The spirit cage is a portable, safer version of the spirit chamber. You can change its position while it is active. The magical barrier is infinitely smaller and will shift accordingly. However, it can only hold a limited number of spirits or ghosts. The spirit cage has been calibrated based on some tests we made - as well as your recent findings over at the graveyard. Using the device on the remains of a ghost right after its defeat should capture it inside this trap. We could then transfer it into our spirit chamber which is in fact a magical barrier. At first, however, we need you to find a specimen and bring it here for us to test the capacity of the device. Are you ready for this?

She confirmed, wondering where she would find a ghost, but relieved that she had actually clearly understood her task. She had heard rumours about ghost ships, and thought about this, but how do you look for a ghost ship? She did not even know if these rumours were true, so she skipped that idea.
While she had never seen one herself when she was there, she had heard that ghosts had been spotted in the haunted ruins of Drefia on Darama. Some people had said that they were the souls of the former inhabitants. Even though that was just sort of tavern-talk, too, Drefia sounded like the better plan.

She started preparing. She made sure she had enough potions, runes, money, and of course also food. She hopped on Truly Dooly, and off they went. They took the carpet to get to Darashia, passed through the desert to get to the mountains in the west, which she knew they had to cross. During the journey, she actually took out her spell book to study a bit. She was nervous as hell. She knew how to get to Drefia, but she had never crossed that mountain complex all by herself. She was also really scared of demon skeletons. The last time she had been to Drefia with some friends, they almost killed her. She did have more experience now, so she should be able to defend herself against them, she hoped. She just had to stay focused and concentrate.

After some time in Drefia, she started to feel more confident. She killed ghoul after ghoul, skeleton warrior after skeleton warrior, demon skeleton after demon skeleton, and tripped over so many sandcrawlers that she finally lost all her fear, and became impatient. She even saw a zombie, but no ghost, yet. She wanted to get out of this hot and awful place. There must be ghosts somewhere. If not here among all these undead beings, where then?, she thought. She even started to fear that ghosts did not even exist at all and that Spectulus and Sinclair really were crazy like the people in the post office had said.

But then, as she went further west, she suddenly saw a transparent white shadow out of the corner of her eye, hiding in one of the ruins. She immidiately knew that she had finally found one! She observed it for a while, and then carefully approached her target, silently clearing the area around it a bit, so that she would have space and time enough to use the spirit cage without putting herself in unnecessary danger. Catching a ghost turned out to be a tedious task, but she managed. When she used the cage, a bright light poured out of its interiour and dragged all remaining energy of the ghost into it.

Proud and relieved that she could finally leave that hot area, she hurried back home. This deserted piece of land was not for her. She was looking forward to the green and lush meadows around Edron and was even looking forward to the cool and damp breeze inside the castle walls...

When Sinclair asked if she had actually caught a ghost, she noticed a bit of disbelief in his eyes. So her pride kicked in. She decided to suck it up and to hold back all complaints about this task she had collected in her mind on her long journey back. She handed over the cage as if all this had been easy as pie.
Sinclair took the cage from her and transferred the essence of the ghost right into the spirit chamber. You really helped us pulling this off. Thank you Snoopy Moony!, he said. I doubt we will have much time to hunt for new specimens ourselves in the near future. If you like, you can continue helping us by finding and capturing more and different ghosts.

Snoopy Moony's jaw dropped. So a spirithunter really was just somebody who hunts ghosts? She felt a bit dumbstruck - she had not imagined this. The title had sounded so cool and exciting. Remembering how awful she had felt in Drefia and how long it had taken her to spot a ghost, she quickly said: Well, thank you very much for the offer, Sinclair! I will have to think about that, though. For now, Truly Dooly needs some attention, I - uhm - might be back some other time!

Without waiting for a reply, she stormed down the stairs and ran towards Stonehome. Out of sight from the magic academy, she let herself fall down into the soft fresh green meadow, hugged the earth and was just very happy to be home again. Spirithunter. Yeah - cool title. For somebody else!, she thought.
